| biography:
| Footballer, born in Budapest, Hungary. A member of the great Hungarian side of the early 1950s, he was severely criticized for playing in the final of the 1954 FIFA World Cup tournament when his fitness was in doubt, and was blamed for the defeat by West Germany. After the invasion of Hungary by the Russians in 1956, he signed for Real Madrid, and was top scorer in the Spanish League four times. He also achieved the unique distinction of scoring four goals and three goals in two separate European Cup finals. He played for Hungary between 1945–56 gaining 84 caps and scoring a world record 82 goals. As a coach, he took the Greek side Panathinaikos to the European Cup final. |
