| biography:
| Playwright, actor, and theatre manager, born in Vienna, Austria. Originally a travelling player, he settled at Vienna's Josephstadt and Leopoldstadt theatres, first as actor and then as director (1828–30). He began writing for the stage in 1823, combining the traditions of late Baroque drama with the suburban Vorstadtkomödie to create Zauberstücke, in which magical beings intervene in the lives of ordinary people. His plays, which influenced among others Nestroy, aim at moral and ethical elevation without losing touch with real life. The best are still regularly performed and include Der Diamant des Geisterkönigs (1824), Das Mädchen aus der Feenwelt oder Der Bauer als Millionär (1826), Der Alpenkönig und der Menschenfeind (1828), and Der Verschwender (1834). He committed suicide, apparently fearing rabies following a dog bite. |
