| biography:
| King of the Two Sicilies (from 1830), born in Palermo, Sicily, S Italy, the son of Francesco I and Maria Isabella di Borbone. He implemented a number of reforms at first, but then his rule turned reactionary. The Sicilian risings forced him to grant a constitution in 1848, but soon he re-established an absolutist regime and dissolved parliament. He also recalled the troops, headed by Guglielmo Pepe, that had gone north to help in the Independence War, and ferociously suppressed any revolts. |
