| biography:
| King of Bulgaria, born in Vienna, Austria. The youngest son of Prince Augustus of Saxe-Coburg and Princess Clementine of Orléans, he served in the Austrian army. On the abdication of Prince Alexander of Bulgaria, Ferdinand was offered, and accepted, the crown in 1887. In 1908 he proclaimed Bulgaria independent, and took the title of king or tsar. Allying himself with the Central Powers, he invaded Serbia in 1915. His armies were routed, and he abdicated in 1918, his son Boris III (1894–1943) succeeding him. |
