| Biochemist, born in Munich, SE Germany. He studied at Munich, became head of biochemistry there, and director of the Max Planck Institute for Cell Chemistry and Biochemistry (1945–79). For his work in lipid biochemistry on the formation of the cholesterol molecule, and discovering the biochemistry of the vitamin biotin, he shared the 1964 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. |
