| biography:
| Poet and priest, born in Sevilla, SW Spain. He was one of the founders of the neoclassical Academia de Letras Humanas (1793). He wrote an interesting poem in two cantos on the model of Paradise Lost: La inocencia perdida, often pedestrian but brilliant in a few passages. He was also the author of a curious apology for the afrancesados who collaborated with Napoleon: Examen de los delitos de infidelidad a la patria imputados a los españoles bajo la dominación francesa (Auch, 1816), translated by H. Wood as Who is the liberator of Spain? (1846). |
