| biography:
| Austrian statesman, born in Krumau, N Austria. During the 1848 Revolution, he was made prime minister, and created a centralized, absolutist, imperial state. He then sought Russian military aid to suppress the Hungarian rebellion (1849), and demonstrated Austrian superiority over Prussia at the Olmütz Convention (1850). His bold initiatives temporarily restored Habsburg domination of European affairs. |
