| African statesman, the first president of Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) (1960–93), born in Yamoussoukro, SC Côte d'Ivoire. He became a doctor, and the leading African politician of French West Africa. He was a member of the French Constituent Assembly (1945–6) and of the National Assembly (1946–59), and held several ministerial posts. He became president when the country was granted independence, was re-elected at every subsequent election, and commenced his seventh term of office in 1990. |
