| biography:
| Spanish statesman and prime minister (1982–96), born in Seville, SW Spain. He practised as a lawyer, and in 1962 joined the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), then an illegal organization. The Party regained legal status in 1977, three years after he became secretary-general. He persuaded the PSOE to adopt a more moderate policy, and in the 1982 elections they won a substantial majority to become the first left-wing administration since 1936; he was narrowly re-elected in 1993 for a fourth consecutive term of office, and was defeated in the general election of 1996. |
