| biography:
| Singer, musician, composer, and dissident, born in Abeokuta, SW Nigeria. The pioneer of ‘Afro-beat’, he successfully took his music to Europe and America, and in Nigeria used it as a form of political protest, attacking government and military corruption and neo-colonialism, and championing African identity. As a result he was a frequent target for government repression, including imprisonment. His saxophonist son Femi Kuti continues the family tradition of music combined with political activism. |
