| biography:
| Duke of Urbino, born in Gubbio, Umbria, C Italy. The illegitimate son of Guidantonio, Count of Montefeltro and Urbino, he became duke in 1474. One of the greatest of all condottiere, he served a number of princes, and was commander-in-chief of the Italic league in 1466. He extended his territories, taking Fano and Fossombrone, and in 1474 his title was recognized by Pope Sixtus IV. He built Urbino's Ducal Palace and established a court that was among the most celebrated in Italy. Baldesàr Castiglione used it as the setting for Il Cortegiano. |
