| biography:
| Poet, born in Fuente Vaqueros, S Spain. A gifted musician, he studied law at Granada, to please his father, but soon turned to the arts, and after publishing a promising book of prose, entered the residence of scholars at Madrid. His Canciones (1927, Songs), Romancero Gitano (1928, 1935, The Gypsy Ballads), and tragic poems place him among the greatest of 20th-c poets. He also wrote successful prose plays, including the trilogy Bodas de Sangre (1933, Blood Wedding), Yerma (1934), and La Casa de Bernarda Alba (1936, The House of Bernarda Alba). He was assassinated in the Spanish Civil War at Granada. |
