| Trade union leader, born in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, EC England, UK. Educated at Hanson Grammar School, Bradford, he began work at 14, and joined the Shopworkers' Union. Shop steward at 15, and chairman of his branch committee at 21, he was a stirring speaker, and in 1937 joined the staff of the Trade Union Council, becoming assistant secretary (1947–60), assistant general secretary (1960–9), and general secretary (1969–73). He fought the Conservative government's anti-union Industrial Relations bill (1972), and helped to form an independent advisory organization to settle labour disputes. He was president of the European Trade Union Conference (1973–4). |
