| Missionary, born in Tremelo, N Belgium. He was renowned for his great work among the lepers of the Hawaiian island of Molokai, where he lived from 1873 until his death from the disease. He became internationally known after Robert Louis Stevenson published a passionate defence of his character and work. He was beatified in 1995. |
