| Educator and missionary, born in Washington, District of Columbia, USA. Purchased out of slavery as a girl, she went on to graduate from college, and as head principal of the Institute for Colored Youth, Philadelphia (1869–1902), pioneered training for urban blacks. Active in the missionary movement, she spent nearly 10 years after 1902 in South Africa. |
