| biography:
| Hymn writer, born in Southeast, New York, USA. Blind from infancy, she was pupil and teacher in New York City's Institute for the Blind. She composed about 6000 popular hymns, including ‘Safe in the Arms of Jesus’ (played at President Grant's funeral) and ‘Pass Me Not, O Gentle Saviour’ (reportedly a favourite of Queen Victoria). Moody and Sankey acknowledged a great debt to her. |
