| Footballer, born in Shanghai, China. His first club was Shanghai Shenhua and he was also national team captain. In 1998 he became one of the first Chinese professional footballers to move to Europe, when he joined English club Crystal Palace for a transfer fee of £1 million. Playing mainly as a defender and in midfield, he was named Player of the Month three times with the club. He then joined Dundee United (Oct 2001–Mar 2002) in the Scottish Premier League before returning to China. In 2002 the People's Republic of China qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals for the first time, and the veteran player is regarded as one of their star performers. |
