| King of Iraq (1921–33), born in Ta'if, Hejaz, son of Hussein ibn Ali, sharif of Mecca. He played a major role in the Arab revolt of 1916, and was for a short while King of Syria after World War 1. Installed as King of Iraq by the British, he laid the foundations of Iraqi independence. |
