| biography:
| Diplomat and politician, born in S Lucido, Calabria, S Italy. He was made cardinal by Pope Pius VI and settled in Naples, but was forced to leave for Palermo with the arrival of French troops in 1798. The next year he obtained the title of royal vicar, landed in Calabria, and there assembled an army of outlaws (including Fra' Diavolo) and peasants, exploiting their anti-Jacobin feelings. He entered Naples with his plundering army in 1799. His conciliatory attitude after the fall of the Parthenopean Republic gained him enemies and he retired abroad, only returning to Naples in 1815. |
