| biography:
| Novelist, born in Batavia, The Netherlands. His profession of diplomat forms the inspiration for his novels. After his first three novels went unnoticed, he came to the attention of a larger public with Bougainville (1981), the story of a diplomat confronted with the psychological effects of his old friend's death. His style, which is influenced by Elsschot, has a casual feel to it which puts the gravity of the subject matter in a different perspective and often has a humorous effect. In 1995 he was awarded the Constantijn Huygensprijs for his entire body of work. |
