| Novelist, born in Leiden, W Netherlands. After he failed his studies, he learned how to play the trombone and performed in several jazz combos. He only began publishing his literary work at a late age, but his first collections of stories Dood weermiddel (1976, Dead Defence) and Ernstvuurwerk (1978, Serious Firework) received immediate attention. Many of his stories have an autobiographical character and depict his childhood memories and life as a jazz musician. In his later work, his realistic way of storytelling is permeated with absurd and dreamlike elements. |
