| Australian statesman and jurist, born in East Maitland, New South Wales, SE Australia. He studied at Sydney University, served in the New South Wales State Assembly, was called to the bar in 1929, and became justice of the High Court of Australia (1930–40). He entered the federal parliament as a Labor member in 1940. As minister of external affairs (1941–9), he was a frequent visitor to Britain, a delegate at international conferences, and responsible for developing an Australian foreign policy independent to Britain's. He represented Australia in Churchill's War Cabinet, and was president of the UN General Assembly (1948–9). He was Leader of the Opposition in the federal parliament (1951–60), after which he became Chief Justice of New South Wales. |
