| US marine officer, born in Sidney, New York, USA. He served in China in the 1930s and developed a great admiration for the Communists there, patterning his Carlson's Raiders, a famous World War 2 marines unit, after the Red Chinese Army. After the war he argued forcefully for peaceful coexistence with the Soviet Union, and after his death his views were attacked by Senator Joseph R McCarthy. |
