| Footballer, born in Lourenço Marques, S Mozambique. He was largely responsible for Portugal's rise in international football in the 1960s. He made his international debut in 1961, and played for his country 77 times. At club level he played for Benfica, winning 15 Portuguese League and Cup-winner's medals. He appeared in four European Cup finals, winning just once, in 1962. He retired in 1978 after a brief spell playing in the USA, and was later appointed coach to Benfica. |
