| Soldier, born in Paris, France, the younger son of Maurizio of Savoia-Carignano. He served Emperor Leopold I and was made field-mashal (1693). He was an adviser to Emperor Joseph, headed the imperial army in Italy during the war for the succession to the Spanish throne, and the succession to the Polish throne. He was a collector and a patron of the arts, and built the Belvedere palace in Vienna. |
