| biography:
| Poet and letter-writer, born in Madrid, Spain. An oidor (judge) in Mexico, Santo Domingo, and Guatemala, he was appointed minister to the Council of the Indies in 1601. An Erasmian satirist in surviving letters reprinted in Vol 176 (1964) of the Biblioteca de Autores Españoles, he also wrote some melodious songs now in Vol 42 (1857) of the same series: ‘Canto del cisne’ and the canción beginning ‘¡Varias y lindas flores...!’ |
