| Biochemist, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He was a chemist at Armour & Co (1941–7), then became a fellow at the University of California, Berkeley (1949–50). He taught and performed research at the University of Chicago (1951–60), before joining Harvard Medical School (1960). During the 1950s he determined the enzymatic pathways for biosynthesis of triglycerides and phospholipids, and his later investigations of membrane function demonstrated the genetically mediated role of proteins in lactose transport in the colon bacillus. |
