| biography:
| Pope (1431–47), born in Venice, NE Italy. He was made a cardinal by his uncle, Pope Gregory XII (1408), and succeeded Martin V as pope (1431). He immediately came into conflict with the Council of Basel, and removed the council to Ferrara in 1437. Antipapal leaders refused to move, declared Eugene deposed, and elected Amadeus VIII of Savoy as antipope. The council at Ferrara relocated to Florence, and in 1439 the Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox churches were temporarily joined. With papal prestige enhanced, Eugene returned to Rome. He was succeeded by Nicholas V. |
