| US representative and senator, born in Turner, Maine, USA. A conservative, he was elected to the US House of Representatives (Republican, Maine, 1869–79) and the US Senate (1881–1911). He was a reliable supporter of business interests, and although he helped to modernize the US Navy, he opposed the spirit of imperialism that followed the Spanish-American War. |
