| US senator, born in Hamilton, Ohio, USA. He practised law in Denver, CO before he was appointed and then elected to the US Senate (Republican, Colorado, 1941–57). Politically unknown before his appointment, he soon became recognized as a thorough conservative and isolationist. He espoused Colorado's irrigation needs while he was on the Interior Committee. |
