| Astronaut, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. A US Navy officer (1956), he became a test pilot and went on to study aeronautical engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey. He undertook astronaut training (1963) and was a crew member of several historic missions: Gemini 9 (1966), Apollo 10 (1969), and Apollo 17 (1972). He was involved in the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project (1975), later resigning from the navy to enter private business. |
