| Physicist, born in Gliwice, S Poland (formerly Gleiwitz, Germany). After studying at the University of Breslau, he worked at the Potsdam Observatory. He discovered that cathode rays could produce sharp shadows, and that they were emitted perpendicular to the cathode surface, leading to the development of concave cathodes to produce focused rays. |
