| Greek geometer and astronomer, born in Cnidus, Asia Minor. In geometry he established principles that laid the foundation for Euclid, then applied the subject to the study of the Moon and planets. He introduced an ingenious system of 27 nested spheres in an attempt to explain planetary motion. |
