| Physiologist, born in Beaune, E France. Professor at the Collège de France (from 1868), he pioneered scientific cinematography with his studies of animal movement (1887–1900). He invented a number of improvements in camera design, and succeeded in reducing exposure time to the region of 1/25 000 of a second for the purpose of photographing the flight of insects. |
