His first book of verse was Cariatides (1842), and short poems about contemporary life appeared in the review Parnasse in 1846. He continued his search for perfection of form in his best-known collection, Les Odes funambulesques (1857). Other works include 36 Ballades joyeuses, Occidentales, rimes dorées, rondels (1875), and the tales Contes pour les femmes (1881) and Contes Bourgeois (1882). The Petit Traité de poésie française (1872) codified Parnassian poetry. He also wrote plays and comedies for the stage, mainly in verse, including Gringoire (1866), Florisse (1870), Riquet à la houppe (1884), and Le Baiser (1890). Mes Souvenirs appeared in 1882. |
