| biography:
| Prelate and statesman, born in Sens, C France. Of aristocratic origins, he studied theology at the Sorbonne, was ordained (1752), and made Archbishop of Toulouse (1762). He was appointed minister of finances and Archbishop of Sens (1787) and later cardinal, which he renounced in 1791 following disagreement with the aristocracy and the parliament. He retired in 1788 to the abbey of Saint-Pierre-le-Vif. A member of the Académie Française, his works include Oraison funèbre du Dauphin (1776). |
