| Anglo-Saxon ruler of Mercia, the daughter of Alfred the Great. She married Ethelred, the ealdorman of Mercia (c.888), and fought alongside him to repel the Danish invaders, their battle culminating in a decisive victory near Tettenhall in 911. After Ethelred's death in that year, she was recognized as ‘Lady of the Mercians’. She built fortified strongholds throughout Mercia, and led counter-attacks on the Danes. |
