| Novelist and children's writer, born in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, N England, UK. She moved to Australia at the age of nine. With her sister, Lilian, she started a magazine, and wrote the children's page, later doing the same for two other Sydney periodicals. Her first book, Seven Little Australians, published in 1894, was an immediate success, has been in print ever since publication, and is now a classic of Australian literature. A sequel came out in the following year, and there followed a steady stream of juvenile books, short stories, and verse. |
