| Poet, scholar, bishop, and politician, born in Kyrkerud, Värmland, SWC Sweden, known as ‘the greatest Swedish poet’. He studied at Lund University (1799–1802), where he was appointed a teacher of aesthetics (1803), deputy university librarian (1805), and professor of philosophy (1810) and of Greek (1812). In 1824 he left to become Bishop of Växio. Elected to the Swedish Academy in 1818, his best-known poems include Frithiof's Saga, Svea, Det eviga, and Sång den 5 April 1836. His orations are also marked by his poetical inspiration, and his 2434 preserved letters are famous for their wit, elegance, and depth of feeling. |
