| biography:
| Physicist, born in Berlin, Germany. He studied engineering in Berlin, then worked for industrial laboratories and at the Fritz Haber Institute until 1952, when he joined the Pennsylvania State University. He became a US citizen in 1962. In 1936 he invented the field emission microscope, and in 1951 the field ion microscope, which gave the first photographs affording a direct view of atoms and some heat-stable molecules. |
