| Barbadian politician and prime minister (1961–76, 1986–7), born in Barbados. He flew in the Royal Air Force (1940–7), then studied at London University and Lincoln's Inn. Returning to Barbados he was elected to the House of Assembly in 1951, co-founding the Democratic Labour Party (DLP). In the elections following independence (1961) the DLP was victorious, and he became the first prime minister. |
