| German politician, born in Hamburg, N Germany. Formerly a harbour and transport worker, in 1903 he joined the Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD), changed over to the Unabhängige Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (USPD) in 1917, and from there to the Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands (KPD). He served on the executive of the KPD (from 1921), in the party cadre (from 1924), and as party leader (1925–30). In 1924–33 he was a member of the Reichstag. He was arrested in 1933 and imprisoned in various concentration camps before his execution in Buchenwald in 1944. |
