| Artist, born in Aschaffenburg, SWC Germany. He studied architecture at Dresden, then turned to painting, and became the leading spirit in the formation of Die Brücke (‘The Bridge’, 1905–13), the first group of German Expressionists. Many of his works were confiscated as degenerate by the Nazis in 1937, and he committed suicide in 1938. |
