| Composer, born in Vienna, Austria. He worked with various German theatres as a conductor and director, emigrated to the USA in 1938, and became a US citizen in 1945. He wrote two symphonies, and developed a style which ranged from jazz, as in his opera Jonny spielt auf (1927, trans Johnny Strikes Up the Band), which made his name, to serialism, as in Karl V (1930–3). After the mid-1950s he adopted various avant-garde idioms. |
