| Art historian, born in Munich, Germany. He studied at the University of Rome (1931–2), the University of Munich (1934 PhD), and at Swarthmore, Pennsylvania (1969 DLitt). He worked in England at the British Museum (1935–40), emigrated to the USA (1941), and taught at Harvard (from 1979). He also taught at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1966–7, 1980, 1982), and specialized in early Christian, Byzantine, and early mediaeval art. |
