| biography:
| Film and stage director, born in Uppsala, E Sweden. A trainee director in the Stockholm theatre, he began his film career in 1943, making his film debut with Kris (1945, Crisis). His explorations of personal torment won many international prizes for such films as Det sjunde inseglet (1957, The Seventh Seal), Smultronstället (1957, trans Wild Strawberries), Jungfrukällan (1960, The Virgin Spring, Oscar), and Såsom i en spegel (1961, Through a Glass Darkly, Oscar), which are outstanding for their photographic artistry, haunting imagery, and subtle exploration of facial characteristics. Preoccupied with guilt, anguish, emotional repression, and death, he created a succession of bleak masterpieces including Viskningar och rop (1972, Cries and Whispers) and Höstsonaten (1978, Autumn Sonata). His later film, Fanny och Alexander (1982, Fanny and Alexander, Oscar), was an unexpectedly life-affirming evocation of autobiographical elements from his own Dickensian childhood. He then largely retired from the film-making scene, but later work includes the script for Private Confessions (1996). Publications include his autobiography Laterna Magica (1987, The Magic Lantern) and Images: My Life in Film (1994). |
