| biography:
| Writer and journalist, born in Butzbach, WC Germany. In 1933 he emigrated to Switzerland, returning to Germany six years later. In 1941 he edited a newspaper at the front, and also worked with the Neues Theater in Frankurt-am-Main and for various newspapers. A successful story-teller, playwright, and essayist, his novels take a realist approach, pursuing historical objectivity; he has a fondness for generalization. He became known through the novel Jahrgang 1902 (1928), depicting the problems of his generation. Der letzte Zivilist (1936) is concerned with the years immediately before the Third Reich, while Glanz und Elend der Deutschen (1960) takes a critical look at the post-war ‘Wirtschaftswunder’. |
