| biography:
| German diplomat, born in Stuttgart, SW Germany. He joined the diplomatic service in 1920 and served as Staatssekretär im Auswärtigen Amt (1938–43) and German ambassador to the Vatican (1943–5). He tried to prevent World War 2 (by warning Great Britain) and to further peace talks. He was sentenced to seven years in prison at the Nuremberg Trials but released in 1950. |
