| Expressionist sculptor, playwright, and poet, born in Wedel, N Germany. He was identified with the German Expressionist school of both art and drama. While he was best known as a sculptor in wood, his greatest achievement was his war memorial at Güstrow Cathedral, a great bronze ‘Angel of Death’, which was removed by Hitler as ‘degenerate’. Barlach's plays include Der tote Tag (1912, The Dead Day) and Der Findling (1922, The Foundling). |
