| biography:
| Italian patriot and intellectual, born in Milan, Lombardy, N Italy. He fought in the 1st and 2nd Italian Independence wars as a volunteer. He was editor of the radical newspaper Il Secolo during 1867–96. A noted pacifist, in 1890 he founded the Unione lombarda per la pace e l'arbitrato, a peace organization, and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1907, but then went on to approve the Libyan venture and Italy's entry into World War 1. |
